Dylan Wills attempts a pin on his wrestling opponent

The wrestling room at Warren Central High School has become a place where hard work speaks louder than words. As the boys wrestling season enters its most important stretch, the Warriors are showing great progress, building on individual wrestlers and positions to get ready for sectionals.

Under the leadership of head coach Nicolas Ellis, Warren Central is concentrating on placing in sectionals and striving for greatness. Coach Ellis wants to build a program focused on discipline, accountability and pushing wrestlers to compete with confidence. Daily practices emphasize technique, mental toughness and conditioning that show in the team’s constant improvement throughout the season.

At this point, we are in the tournament series and sectionals this weekend,” Ellis said. “There will be a lot less days where we spend time teaching technique to the entire team and more time focusing on individuals and what they need to work on, whether it is a position they need to improve on, or if there is a game plan for a specific match coming up that we need to implement.”

Their approach has been paying off in recent meets, where Warren Central has battled through tight matchups and turned close, nail-biting contests into victories. Wrestlers such as Dylan Wills and Byron Baltzell have stepped up in crucial moments, earning pins and making hard-fought decisions to keep the team energized and excited. The team has special traditions and quotes to maintain a high intensity and keep wrestlers on their toes.

“Our motto typically is, ‘Stay ready so you don't have to get ready,’” Ellis said. “You never know when your opportunity is going to present itself. At any moment, you could become the guy. You never know when your team is going to need you, so it is important that you stay ready at all times.”

The Warriors’ lineup features a strong blend of experience and youth. Veteran wrestlers Wills and Baltzell, along with Coach Ellis, have provided leadership, while newcomers and underclassmen continue to gain confidence against varsity competition. The team finds helping underclassmen grow very important, as they are the leaders of the future wrestling team at Warren Central.

“At the start of the season, it is easy for everyone to be motivated and excited because things are just getting started,” Ellis said. “But as the year goes on and things get tiring and long, it is important to remind the guys of what their goals are and how close they are to them. They must be reminded to continue to put their heads down and work, even when they don't want to. “

As sectional competition approaches, the Warriors are aiming to peak at the right time. With a clear identity built on discipline and resilience, Warren Central’s boys wrestling program continues to prove that success is earned long before they hit the mat.
